Day 2- Fernandina, FL to Saint Simons, GA
Today was a short traveling day, only 34.8 miles. We purposely left shortly after 7am so that we would be at a stretch of the ICW at a higher tide level. The stretch near Jekyll Island is known for its shallow water. We could literally see mud flats on each side of the boat. Pictures shown below.
The AICW (Atlantic Inter Costal Waterway) must continually be dredged to remove sand and silt from the bottom to maintain a working depth. This is one of the machines that does the hard work.
The black pipe carries the spoil from the bottom to a pre-determined place.
Here the sand is deposited and the water runs back into the waterway.
By following these markers we stay in the deep (SAFE) part of the waterway.
Birds like to claim them as their own.

We like the markers to keep us in the middle!
