Day 17 - Dowry Creek, Belhaven, NC to Coinjock, NC

A 71 mile day. One of our longest so far.

The sun is up, that means we are firing up the engine. Or, that Paul is telling me  "get up, we are burning daylight".

This is the Alligator River-Pungo River Canal.  The only good river is a straight river, or so my father used to quote the US Army Corps of Engineers.  A prime example, it has one turn and is about 22 miles long. I've never seen an alligator in the Alligator River, but I have seen deer swim across in front of the boat.  I don't know what a pungo is, so I can't say that I've ever seen one of those, either.

The sun is much higher in the sky, but our view hasn't really changed.

The view stayed the same on the sides too. Very lush.

The water is full of tannins again.

Oh oh, another low bridge. Low, but high enough that we can sneak through.

Last year at this bridge, I did a favor for the bridge tender and waited for another boat to come up and go through with us.  After we cleared the bridge, the bridge tender called me on the radio to thank me and told me that he called ahead to Coinjock Marina and told them to give me a beer on his tab.  I never collected the beer, but it qualifies as a good story.

I'm back on the top of the boat, watching how much room we have to spare.

We are doing good.

Almost through. It does scare the crap out of us when a car goes over as we are going under. Really loud. Yikes!!

Did you know that a group of pilings is called a dolphin?
Neither did I until Paul explained.

I am a fountain of useless information.  But a stickler for proper nomenclature.

These dark spots you see on the photo are duck blinds. Definitely need a boat to get to them.

Met a barge in the channel. These were crushed cars.

A few minutes later we met a second barge.

We got tied up to the dock and the fog rolled in.

This is Coinjock Marina, a famous stop along the waterway.  Mostly because it simply there, at a convenient distance from everyplace else.  Even more famous is their Prime Rib dinner.  When we were in the Alligator-Pungo Canal, we called and reserved two medium rare dinners so the rich (and fast) folks didn't get it all before we could get there.
