Day 49- Brewerton, NY to Oswego, NY
Today we will arrive at the first of the Great Lakes we will traverse.
Lock 23, the last lock on the Erie Canal for us. The guillotine gate is just that,
a gate just in front of the lock, which has conventional gates.
All of the locks from here to Lake Ontario are down locks.
Finally saw a robin.
I'm sure this was a nice dock. Now it's just a break water.
Dolphins!! No, not like 'Flipper'. The kind that barges can tie up to.
New York style tiki hut
Decisions, decisions... At the Three Rivers intersection. Left to Buffalo, right to Oswego. We go right. They say that the Western Erie Canal is a lovely trip, less commercial than the part we have done. And we saw precious little 'Commercial'. Maybe next time...
Sights along the river.
Definitely good kayaking here.
A perfect little getaway place.
Come on kids, keep up!
Canal maintenance facility.
Cute little thing. Maybe they used this one to take the dignitaries on tour.
Heading into another lock.
There are seven locks on the 24 miles of the Oswego Canal.
They are numbered 1-8. You read that right. Old #4 got eliminated during one of the improvement jobs years ago.
This lock had mussels. They were the size of a dime,
and they were squirting at me!
Oswego Lock #1. A draw bridge is immediately after the lock and is operated by the Lockmaster. A week ago this bridge was broken and neither cars nor boats could pass.
The great blue herons are fun to watch.
This one is in hunting stance.
He got a fish!
Uncle Joe's Trading Post. I would love to know the
stories that go with some of these.
"Stop" is not merely a suggestion here.
Another gate garden.
Another one of the small towns along the way.
A pretty horseshoe dam.
And another one!
The water came rushing at us. Part of the wall was broken.
We have arrived at Oswego, the final NY town. We are now at the edge
of Lake Ontario. Our next journey will take us into Canada.
Many cool buildings along the waterfront.
Oswego is a nice small town. An Uber ride with Kenneth, the sole Uber driver in town during the day, to pick up some last minute provisions. It is uncertain if they have food in Canada, so we stocked up. Weather looks good for tomorrow!
