Day 135-137- Aug 29-Aug 31

A 51 mile day to move south on Lake Michigan from Muskegon to South Haven.

The swans came by in the morning to say goodbye from Muskegon.

An uneventfully calm ride to South Haven!
Nothing to take pictures of while on the lake today.

South Haven Light
greeted us up arriving in South Haven.

A beautiful replica Sloop introducing passengers to the old days of sail.

This is a hibiscus. The flowers were HUGE!

A little artwork along the walk to the lighthouse.

These two pictures show the catwalk going to the light. Learn more here.

We got REALLY tall on this picture.

Long sandy beaches.

People taking the tour to see the sunset.

These two chaps are volunteers with the local lighthouse foundation.  They were sweeping sand out of the ground floor, which finds it's way in when the seas get rough, and they can get rough.  The lighthouse is owned by the foundation, but the Coast Guard maintains the light and fog signal, NOAA has a weather observation device on the top, too.

The sun looked huge!

Normal walking kit, two sticks and a hat.

This sloop was originally built in 1810. Click on the name for more info.
Friends Good Will is part of the Michigan Maritime Museum collection.

Literally sailing into the sunset.

I couldn't choose just one picture of the sunset, pier and boats.
So, you get them all.

Thursday evening is sailboat race night, the fleet is coming back in after slogging it out in 10 knots of breeze.

I hope you enjoyed those sunset pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. Believe it or not, I only posted half of them.

Onward and southward after reading the tea leaves in the weather forecast, which was generally bleak.  At least until I dug deeper into the details.  By the time I am done with this lake, maybe I will know how to figure out the weather and what is acceptable for a trawler.

A new state and a new time zone.
Welcome to Michigan City, Indiana and Central Daylight Savings Time zone.

The electricity is fresh!

Another catwalk, one of 5 in the entire state.

Another beautiful sunset.

DAY 137
August 31

We will be in Michigan City through the holiday weekend to catch up on life and avoid the amateur boaters out on the waters.

This little scene has been kicking around in my head since we first got underway and we've had to deal with kitty litter management.

Having a few days off from moving feels good. It provides time to do laundry, clean the boat, pull out the art supplies, take walks and do some shopping.

Sometimes seemingly innocuous scenes have interesting stories. A crowded beach on a holiday weekend, but the girl in the bikini decides to sun herself facing away from the water under the watchful eye of the lifeguard.  And he's definitely not scanning the water's edge.  He does have a nifty Jeep and a surfboard, but the part I like is the illuminated sign warning that "No Lifeguard" is on duty.  The sign may be right.

This memorial honors those from the Civil War.

The park area includes the marina. From the looks of things,
their Congressman brought home the WPA bacon during the Great Depression.

I have gone under many bridges in boats while they opened. I have waited in cars while bridges were open. This, however, was the first time I was walking and had to wait for one.
We had to wait for a drawbridge!!  Damn sailboats!

But we didn't have to wait for the train, we were already across the tracks
when this Amtrak train flew by.

Check back tomorrow for the end of the month report and maps.
