Day 178-180- October 11, 12 & 13

Sea smoke on the water as we left.
In the early morning, we made the very difficult decision to leave Pebble Isle Marina.
As I told the owner the evening before, "We came for the cinnamon rolls.  We stayed for the cinnamon rolls.  We are leaving because of the cinnamon rolls." She even tried to send some along with us to bake later. NO!

The "sea smoke" cleared pretty quickly.

This is a huge chemical plant.
I looked up their website to see what they make... CHEMICALS. Very vague.

The river along this way is pretty much the original Tennessee River, as it would have looked 180 years ago. Well, not the bridges, of course...
White pelicans on the sandbar.

Traffic was backed up for 50+ minutes due to an accident.
Google knows everything.

This was next to the big power plant.

These guys had the best view.

These guys were the loudest and had the biggest rooster tail.

Many summer homes along the lake.

The leaves are getting prettier.

Parks and campgrounds in many places.

The rock strata (layers) was the norm.

First large stand of Aspen trees. Already turned gold just for us.

This has become a common sight.  RVs under large, some very large, shade car ports.  Given that most of the houses you see along these parts are up high on pilings, I would assume that the owners come down here and hitch these things up at flood time and take them to higher ground.

See the elevator?

Finally saw someone out enjoying the water.

This stretch of the Tennessee River is really built up.

Did you spot the buzzards?

DAY 179
October 12

Another day at Clifton, TN. A friend of mine back in Rapid City, SD has good friends who live outside Clifton, TN. The Tennessee folks were curious about our Great Loop trip and offered to take us on a tour of their area.

Thanks Tony and Barb for showing us the sights.
It was a eye-opening look into life in middle Tennessee.
Paul was amazed at the quiet, emptiness of the area.

The first stop was the Shiloh Battlefield from the Civil War.

The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, allowed Union troops to penetrate the Confederate interior. The carnage was unprecedented, with the human toll being the greatest of any war on the American continent up to that date. Click here for more details.

The museum was very well done.
The 45 minute film was heart wrenching to watch, but was really informative.

One of many of the monuments dedicated to the soldiers lost.

Tennessee has a lot of trees! A lot of unusual shaped trees and vines too.

Main Street, Clifton, TN.  About a block and a half.
Exactly one mile from the marina.  Ask me how I know.
Hey Paul! How do you know??

Ornate ironwork railing and brickwork.

DAY 180
October 13

On Sunday Barb took me to their property for a tour.
She showed me a few more sites around Clifton on the way.

Only $48 for 18 holes on the weekend!!

The colors are gorgeous.

Beautiful area. Very peaceful.

Barb and I jumped in the Kawasaki Mule for the property tour.

Check out those vines!!

The yellow cactus flower turn into these purple pods.
Barb said, "almost ripe enough to eat."

Ducky-duck was guarding the pond.

Thanks again for the Tennessee hospitality!!

Clifton Marina
Clifton Marina is a friendly place.  They welcome us Loopers.  The restaurant was 'Closed' the day we arrived due to a wedding rehearsal dinner.  But the restaurant was open for us loopers and it was good.  The Goose had a front row seat at the restaurant/bar.
The rehearsal dinner was quiet. Live music, but background volume.
The next night was karaoke night, it was a different kettle of fish.

I assume that 'bad karaoke' is redundant.  Just before midnight, and I was compelled to be awake, there was one guy singing to an empty house as the staff cleaned up, stacked chairs and tried to go home.  It was painful.  Note the top of my rum bottle strategically placed?
It did not make the singing any better!!
