Day 228-229- December 1 & 2

What's this?  The sun was already up BEFORE we leave??
Yes, and there is a "sundog" to the left of the sun. See the vertical rainbow?
In South Dakota these always meant COLD weather was coming.
Cold is exactly what is forecast for the next few days. There is even a frost warning for Jacksonville, FL, where we are going!!

More hurricane evidence.

Do you see the island?
An island looking for a Gilligan.
Amazing to see a tree, on an island out here.

Haulover Canal entrance.

Did he buy a kayak for fishing since his wife wasn't interested, OR, did he buy a kayak for fishing so his wife couldn't join him? Hmmmmm....

The fisherman were prolific in this canal.

The Haulover bridge.
It crosses a channel between the Indian River and the Mosquito Lagoon.

You can live here for $50,000.

Or you can live here for $3.5 million.

Every roof on each building of this homestead had these scalloped roof line.
I looked up the address. It was on Zillow along with pictures.
Click here to see the inside, it is impressive.

This is an excellent example of a corkscrew palm.

Not sure whether these folks are proud Americans or if it's income tax season.
Didn't we see this lady somewhere else on the loop??

Ponce de Leon Lighthouse, just North of New Smyrna Beach.

Daytona!

We are one day away from "the barn".
Traveling from Daytona to Saint Augustine today.

American bald eagles are champion pole-sitters.
One broken palm tree and he found it.

Very common sight along the Intercoastal Waterway in Florida.

This apartment complex has boat docks.

This apartment complex was painted in pretty pastel colors.

Actual sand banks along this stretch.

I love pelicans.  The brown pelicans are more commonly seen around harbors.
These white ones are a tad anti-social and prefer to hang out together away from people.
We've been fortunate to see them along the way, even in the Tennessee River.

Saint Augustine Lighthouse!!

The mooring field in St Augustine.

Saint Augustine, it's an old city.  The spire on the right is a cathedral.
The red towers and rooftops to the left are the old Flagler Hotel, now Flagler College.
Flagler is the man who invented Florida by building hotels down the east coast, then he built a railroad so the rich folks could come to his hotels.

The Bridge of Lions in downtown.

The Castillo de San Marco.  The Spanish built it, now we own it.
It was here that old Ponce de Leon allegedly discovered the Fountain of Youth
and sold that idea back in Spain..  Clearly an entrepreneur who inspired Flagler.

The Great Cross
208 feet of stainless steel. Read more by clicking on the link.

A look out to the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance.  Looks a little sporty out there!

Washing the salt off the boat.  Most of this was courtesy of a sport fishing boat that was apparently incapable of slowing down as he went by.

I think Paul figured out that I was taking his picture...

Our home for the last night on the loop.

The Conch House Marina and Restaurant!
Enjoying the company of friends Val and Dave, my St Augustine family.  Shrimp and grits!!

They felt sorry for me for having re-homed Grady the cat.
This one doesn't shed (or use a litter box)!
